Professional DStv installation in Midrand

Everything you should know before you book: what we do, how it works and what to expect.

Why Midrand homeowners call us

Midrand is a mix of townhouse complexes, estates, older suburbs and busy offices, and every one of them has different TV needs. A flat in a complex may share a communal dish, a house in an older suburb may have cabling that has weathered for years, and a new home may have no TV points at all. We look at your actual situation first, then recommend only what you need.

Our approach is simple. We give you a clear price before we start, we work neatly, and we test everything with you before we leave. If something is not right, we want to hear about it so we can put it right.

New DStv installation: what is included

A proper installation is more than putting a dish on a wall. The dish must point at the satellite with millimetre accuracy, the LNB must suit your setup, and the cable has to be run and sealed so that rain and heat do not damage it over time.

  • A site visit to find the best position for the dish, with a clear view of the sky and no trees or walls in the way.
  • Secure mounting of the dish, using the right fixings for brick, plaster or roof.
  • Aligning the dish and checking signal strength and quality on the decoder.
  • Running coaxial cable to the decoder and sealing every outdoor connection.
  • Connecting the decoder to your TV, setting it up and showing you how to use it.
  • Tidying up, so you are left with a clean finish and no loose cable.

Before the visit, have your TV, remote and any existing decoder ready. If you already have a dish, tell us, because it is often possible to reuse it.

The Explora Ultra and smart features

Modern DStv decoders do far more than show channels. Depending on your decoder and subscription, you can pause and record live TV, watch on-demand content, use catch-up, and run streaming apps on the same box. Many of these features need an internet connection, so a good home Wi-Fi signal near the decoder makes a real difference.

If you are upgrading from an older decoder, we can move you across, connect it to your network and explain how the new remote and menus work. If you are not sure whether your current decoder supports what you want, message us and we will check the model.

Extra View: two decoders, one subscription

Extra View is for households where people want to watch different things at the same time. Instead of paying a full second subscription, an additional decoder is linked to your main account. That means the lounge can watch the match while the bedroom watches a series.

The second decoder needs its own signal feed, so we run a suitable cable from the dish and use the right LNB. We also make sure both decoders are linked and working correctly before we leave. If your dish setup needs upgrading to support this, we will explain that in the quote.

Extra TV points

Sometimes you do not need a second decoder. You just want the same picture on another TV. There are two common ways to do this.

  • Coaxial from the decoder output: a cable runs from the decoder’s output to the second TV. It is affordable and works well, but both TVs show the same channel and you share one remote signal path.
  • HDMI over Cat6: the decoder’s HDMI signal travels over network cable to a receiver at the other TV. This keeps full HD quality over longer distances and is often the neatest option in a home that already has network cabling.

We will recommend whichever suits your walls, distances and budget, and we hide cabling wherever we can.

LNB and cable replacement

The LNB is the small part at the end of the dish arm that receives the signal. It sits in the sun and rain every day, so it does wear out. Cable is the same. Over the years the outer layer can crack, water can enter the cable, and the signal slowly gets worse.

Warning signs include pixelating in wet weather, channels dropping out, a signal that gets weaker over time, or a “no signal” message when the sky is clear. Replacing a worn LNB or cable early is usually cheaper than waiting until water reaches the decoder. We use quality coaxial cable and weatherproof connectors, and we check the dish alignment while we are there.

Relocating your DStv

Moving house does not mean losing your TV setup. We take down the dish and decoder carefully, then install them at your new place. Because every home has a different view of the sky, the dish is aligned again from scratch. If you are renting, tell us and we will choose a mounting position that is practical for your lease.

Book us for both ends of the move if you can. We can take the system down before you go and have it working at the new address as soon as you settle in.

TV wall mounting

A wall-mounted TV frees up space and looks far better, but it must be done properly. A heavy screen on the wrong fixings is a danger to people and to your wall. Before drilling, we check for pipes and electrical cables, choose the right bracket for your TV size and weight, and mount it at a comfortable viewing height.

We can also route power and HDMI cables so they are not hanging down the wall. For a tidy result, we recommend deciding where your decoder, sound bar and other devices will sit before we start. Fixed, tilt and full-motion brackets are all options, and we will help you choose.

Surround sound and home cinema

Good sound changes how a movie or match feels. We set up sound bars and surround systems, place the speakers to suit your room and connect everything to your TV and decoder. Then we adjust the settings so dialogue is clear and the effects fill the room without being too loud.

If you are planning a new system, tell us your room size and the equipment you own. We can advise what will work and install it neatly.

Communal and commercial installations

Complexes, estates, guest houses, restaurants and offices often need a shared system instead of one dish per unit. A communal setup can feed many units from a central point, so the building stays tidy and every unit gets a stable signal. Businesses may also need TVs at several points, reliable coverage in guest rooms or a bar area, or a system that other staff can manage easily.

Each of these jobs starts with a site assessment. We look at the layout, the number of outlets and the existing equipment, then give you a written quote. We can also fix or extend an existing shared system that is unreliable.

Areas we serve around Midrand

We work in Midrand and nearby areas, including Halfway House, Vorna Valley, Noordwyk, Carlswald, Kyalami, Waterfall, Blue Hills, Erand Gardens, Country View, Ebony Park, Ivory Park, Clayville and Tembisa. Not on the list? Send us your address on WhatsApp and we will tell you if we can get to you.

Before you call: a quick checklist

  • Which service do you need: new install, repair, extra TV, relocation, wall mount or sound?
  • Your decoder model, if you know it. A photo of the back or the label is fine.
  • Any error message on screen. Take a photo.
  • Your suburb or complex, and whether you own or rent.
  • Photos of the spot where you want the TV, dish or extra point.

Simple things to try before you book a repair

Some problems are quick to fix. Check that the cables are firmly in the decoder and TV, and that the TV is on the right input. Restart the decoder by switching it off at the wall for a minute. Look at the dish for anything blocking it, such as a bird’s nest, a bent arm or a branch that has grown in front of it. Heavy rain can also cause a temporary drop in signal, which usually returns when the weather clears.

If the problem stays, or you see a signal or error message that will not clear, send us a photo. Many faults come down to a worn LNB, damaged cable or a dish that has shifted. We can usually tell you what to expect before we visit.

DStv in Midrand: the complete customer guide

Plain answers to the questions Midrand customers ask us most.

How a DStv installation works, step by step

Knowing what happens on the day helps you prepare and helps the job go faster. Here is how a typical installation goes.

  • Contact and quote. You call or WhatsApp us, tell us what you need and send photos if you can. We give you a quote for the work before we come out.
  • Site check. When we arrive, we walk around the property with you. We look for the best place for the dish: a clear view towards the satellite, a solid surface to fix to, and a sensible route for the cable.
  • Mounting and alignment. We fix the dish securely, fit the LNB and point the dish. Alignment is done using a signal meter and the decoder, not by guessing.
  • Cabling. We run the cable to the decoder position, using clips and, where needed, trunking, so it stays neat and protected from sun and rain.
  • Setup and testing. We connect the decoder and TV, check that all channels come through, and make sure signal strength and quality are healthy.
  • Handover. We show you the basics, answer your questions and clean up before we leave.

Most standard installations are done in a few hours. Jobs with extra TV points, long cable runs or a communal system take longer, and we will tell you what to expect when we quote.

Choosing the right decoder

The right decoder depends on how you watch. If you want the basics, a standard HD decoder is enough. If you want to record shows, pause live TV, stream apps and use catch-up on demand, look at the Explora range. Newer decoders can connect to your home network, which unlocks more features.

Think about these points before you buy:

  • How many TVs do you want to watch on, and will people watch different things at the same time?
  • Do you want to record programmes, or do you mostly watch live?
  • Is your Wi-Fi strong where the decoder will sit?
  • Will you add a sound bar or home cinema system later?

Not sure? Send us the model of your current decoder and what you want to do. We can tell you what will work with your existing dish and cable, and what would need to be changed.

Why DStv loses signal: the common causes

When the screen says there is no signal, the decoder is not getting a clean signal from the dish. The reason is usually one of the following.

  • The dish has moved. Strong wind, a knock, or loose bolts can shift the dish just enough to lose the satellite. The fix is to re-align it and tighten the fixings.
  • Something is in the way. A growing tree, a new wall or a building next door can block the line of sight. Sometimes the dish must be moved to a clearer spot.
  • A faulty LNB. The LNB is exposed to sun and rain all year. When it fails, the signal weakens or drops out. Replacing it is usually quick.
  • Damaged or worn cable. Cracked cable, water inside the cable and loose connectors are all common. A weak or damaged cable can cause pixelating, freezing or a complete loss of signal.
  • Bad connections. A loose plug at the decoder or a corroded connector at the dish can cause problems that look serious but are simple to fix.
  • Weather. Very heavy rain or storms can temporarily interrupt the signal. This normally clears when the weather does. If the signal fails in light rain, the cause is more likely a worn cable or LNB.

What does E48-32 mean?

E48-32 is one of the most common messages we are asked about. In simple terms, it means the decoder is not receiving a satellite signal. It does not tell you why. The cause could be any of the faults above, so the fix depends on finding the real problem: checking the connections, the cable, the LNB and the dish position.

If you see this message, take a photo of the screen and send it to us on WhatsApp. It helps us understand what you are seeing before we visit. Do not climb onto a roof to check the dish yourself. It is not worth the risk.

Wi-Fi, streaming and your decoder

Many newer decoders can connect to the internet to give you streaming apps, on-demand shows and catch-up. For this to work well, the decoder needs a stable connection. A weak signal is the most common reason apps buffer or fail to load.

  • Place your router as close to the decoder as practical, ideally in the same room.
  • Where a wired connection is possible, a network cable is more reliable than Wi-Fi.
  • Avoid hiding the router in a cupboard or behind metal, which blocks the signal.
  • If your house is large, a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system can help.

We can help set up your decoder’s network connection when we install or upgrade it.

TV wall mounting: what to know before you book

Wall mounting is one of the easiest ways to make a room look better, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The details matter.

  • Wall type. Brick, concrete, plasterboard and wood all need different fixings. Tell us what your wall is made of.
  • Bracket type. A fixed bracket keeps the TV flat against the wall. A tilt bracket helps if the TV sits high. A full-motion bracket lets you swing and angle the screen.
  • Height. As a rule, the middle of the screen should be roughly at eye level when you are seated. Mounting too high causes neck strain.
  • Cables. Decide early where the decoder and other devices will go. This lets us hide cables neatly rather than leaving them hanging.
  • Weight. Give us your TV size and model so the bracket is rated for it.

Body corporates, estates and property managers

If you manage a complex or estate, you know that TV problems affect many people at once. A shared system that is unreliable creates repeated complaints, and repeated call-outs cost money. A careful assessment usually saves time in the long run.

When you contact us, it helps to have the number of units, the current type of system, and any history of faults. We look at the existing equipment, find the cause of the problems and give you a written quote for the repair or upgrade. We can also advise on whether a shared system or individual dishes make more sense for your property.

Looking after your DStv system

A little regular attention prevents most problems. Once or twice a year, it is worth a simple check.

  • Look at the dish from the ground. Does it look level and in the same position as before?
  • Check that no branches or new obstacles are near the dish.
  • Look at visible cable for cracks, cuts or sun damage.
  • Make sure the decoder has airflow and is not covered or crammed into a hot cabinet.
  • Keep the decoder software up to date by leaving it connected to power and, if it is a connected model, the internet.

If the dish is high up or on a roof, do not climb up to inspect it. Ask us to do a routine check instead.

Moving into a new home in Midrand

Before you move, find out whether the property already has a dish. If it does, we can inspect the dish, LNB and cable, and usually reuse what is good. If not, we install a new system. We can also add TV points to rooms that need them before you unpack. Book early if you are moving on a specific date, so your TV is ready when you arrive.

Why you should not climb up and fix it yourself

Do-it-yourself dish work looks easy, but it carries real risks. Falls from ladders and roofs cause serious injuries. Dish alignment also needs the right tools, and a small mistake can mean hours of trial and error. A wrongly fitted dish can move again in the first strong wind. It is safer, and usually cheaper in the end, to have it done properly.

Quick answers

How long does a DStv installation take?

Most standard installations take a few hours. Extra TV points, long cable runs and communal systems take longer, and we tell you what to expect in the quote.

Can you reuse my existing dish?

Often yes. We check the dish, LNB and cable first, and reuse what is in good condition.

Why does my DStv pixelate or freeze?

Common causes are a worn LNB, damaged cable, loose connections, a dish that has moved, or heavy rain. A photo of the screen helps us diagnose it.

Can I watch DStv on my phone or tablet?

Yes, if your subscription and devices support streaming. That needs a stable internet connection, and we can help with the decoder’s network setup.

What should I have ready when you arrive?

Your TV, remote, current decoder if you have one, and access to the roof or wall where the dish will go. Photos sent ahead of time speed everything up.

Do you work in complexes and estates?

Yes. Contact us with the number of units and the current system so we can assess it and give you a quote.

Do you charge to check? What if you can’t fix it?

We quote before we start and tell you about any call-out or diagnostic fee upfront. If we do the job, you pay the job price. If we truly cannot fix it, we tell you before charging anything extra.

Do you bring Explora Ultra stock?

We keep decoders, Smart LNBs and brackets in the van, so most jobs finish the same day.

Will you make a mess when mounting?

No. We use a stud finder, vacuum the dust, hide cables in trunking that matches the wall and take photos afterwards.

Do you connect Netflix or Showmax to DStv?

Yes, on Explora Ultra. We connect it to your Wi-Fi, log you into your apps and show you how to use it.

Do you work in Midrand?

Yes, Midrand and the surrounding areas. Call or WhatsApp us to confirm we cover your address.

Can you fix DStv no signal in Midrand?

Yes. We troubleshoot common problems such as E48-32, searching for signal, dish alignment, faulty LNBs and damaged cables.

Do you install ExtraView?

Yes. We help with compatible ExtraView and multi-room installations, including the cabling and connections.

Can you relocate my DStv dish?

Yes. We relocate the dish and decoder for customers who are moving or need the dish repositioned.

Do you provide TV wall mounting?

Yes, in Midrand and surrounding areas.

How much does an installation cost?

It depends on the equipment and the number of TV points. Send us a message and we’ll quote before any work starts.

Can you connect DStv on more than one TV?

Yes. Extra View lets two decoders share one subscription, and we can add extra TV points using coax or HDMI-over-Cat6.

My screen shows an error code. What now?

Send us the code and a photo of the screen. Many errors come from a worn LNB, damaged cable or a dish that has moved.

Do you work on weekends?
